Russia finishes test of Akademik Lomonosov floating nuke
MOSCOW, Apr 24 (PRIME) -- Russia has completed testing a nuclear power generation facility on floating nuclear power unit Akademik Lomonosov, Rosenergoatom, an affiliate of corporation Rosatom, said in a statement on Wednesday.
Both reactors of the nuclear power unit were successfully taken to full capacity. “The tests confirmed sustainable work of the key and supporting equipment of the floating nuclear power plant and of automatic systems of technological processes management,” the company said.
The plant is to receive a license for use in July.
Akademik Lomonosov’s design capacity is 70 megawatts (MW). The plant will operate in the Chukotka Autonomous District and is to replace a 48 MW Bilibino nuclear power plant, the world’s only nuclear power plant operating in the permafrost zone, and the Chaunskaya TETs thermal power plant.
